    Hi, All!

FYI, Ardith had a fall last Wednesday morning and is in hospital recovering. She's not hurt, just couldn't weight bear or walk at all. She's very much better today and walking with a walking frame. We hope she'll be sent home by the end of next week.

    Cheers... Dallas

Thanks -- she's back home as of last night and feeling much better. It will take a bit of time for her to get back on her feet, but I suspect she'll be online shortly!

Good! I've been itching to ask her is it clear for English people when they read in the book about Harry Potter:

    -----Beginning of the citation-----
Whenever Harry passed Quirrell these days he gave him an encouraging sort of smile.
----- The end of the citation -----

I still wonder who gave a smile to whom? ;-)

    Bye, Dallas!

I would say if someone can't put weight on their foot or walk, then they are hurt.

Ah. I reckon you were thinking along the usual lines of "fall down, go boom" --> strains, sprains, pulled ligaments, broken bones, etc.

In this case, for various medical reasons, my legs simply couldn't bear my weight & I sank into a tired little puddle. Apart from a few minor abrasions & contusions, I suffered no further damage in the fall.

Thanks to the staff at our local hospital I'm doing better now.... :-)

And why do I keep coming back here?? It's because folks here want to learn about English, rather than put up with me because it's a requirement. :-Q

I also find this sentence, as written, quite ambiguous.

Perhaps a bit more of the context might help. Which individual seems more in need of encouragement at the moment? Dallas tells me Quirrell is one of the teachers at Hogwarts... IOW it's part of his job to be aware of such things. From what I know of teenagers in general, I'd say it's probable that the teacher meant to encourage Harry. But Harry was a very bright student who may also have recognized that support people often need encouragement just as they do.... :-)
