The US elections on November 3rd involve 39 governorships and a great many local political positions.
One-third of the seats in the Senate are up for grabs.
All seats in the House of Representatives are at stake.
So, a great deal could change.
What is remarkable is that in many states, the outcome is effectively a foregone conclusion. Regardless of how dissatisfied voters may be, they remain loyal to the party they have supported for decades. In reality, the outcome hinges on only a handful of states, the few where the result remains uncertain. These states will ultimately determine which party holds the majority in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
In some states, the situation is tense, partly because "gerrymandering", the redrawing of electoral districts, has made the results less predictable. In states where Republicans have altered district boundaries, the question is how the backlash against Trump will manifest within these new configurations. Districts that were once "deep red" (solidly Republican) but have now been combined with Democratic-leaning voters could potentially flip to the Democrats, especially if many Republicans choose either to abstain from voting or to cast their ballots for the Democratic candidate.
Tensions are rising, not least because the Republicans sense they could face significant losses. What kind of stunts might they pull to prevent this? Shameless fraud? Declaring martial law, initiating a new war, or perhaps staging another "attack" on Trump, one that might miraculously leave him with a perfectly intact ear once again?
Nothing is too extreme, provided it helps them win the election. Whatever you do, you can always count on a pardon from Trump if it works out to the advantage of the Republicans.
Just under two weeks to go, and then the moment will be here.
