  • Giving Linux a Try

    I have several computers that I can use to try out different operating systems, and decided to give Linux
    Mint a try.

    It installed perfectly, so I decided to try and run a specific Windows program. That program was not
    listed in the Winetricks list of applications.

    I did a search on my drive for the specific program's .exe. file, but it would not load.

    Does anyone have any information on how to load a program that is not in the list?

    Download the Windows program to your hard-drive.

    I think Linux Mint is clever enough that you may double click on the EXE file and it will open it up with wine straight away. If not, you can probably right click on the EXE and select "Open With", then chose Wine.

    You may also launch the program from the terminal and read its output in order to find out if there is any issue with it:

    $ wine /path/to/program/exe/file

    Also look the program up in the wine database

    I don't have a Wine instance right here (I am running OpenBSD).

    If it is an old program, then something worth trying is to configure your Wine to run in compatibility mode set for the Windows version that program was designed to run on. Try with winecfg and play a bit with the configuration.

    I am using a Win 11 to test out Synchronet, and it will work. If I can figure it out, I may host it on a leased server. I think I can do that for $70 a year. I am struggling with the network setup, so I may just forget about it.

    Thanks for the info. I will still give it a try on the Linux machine, just to see if I can do it.
