ICQ IS SHUTTING DOWN AFTER ALMOST 28 YEARS (2 MINUTE READ) [16]
I was surprised ICQ was still around/running. I don't think I've used since the '90s.
Same here.. think the last time I used it was 2001 or so and I have
really never seen any mention of it since around then either.
i remember setting up hoblink x11 on os/2 so i could use "gaim" (now pidgin) on my desktop to talk to people with icq, aim, and msn. eventually i started using it's cousin "bitlbee" .. an irc<->whatever gateway. some of that stuff lasted a little while longer because Apple extended the life of AIM quite a bit via iChat.. iirc most of the people on my list only had the other messengers still because someone they knew had iChat and it wasn't worth the effort to remove those accounts.
kind of ironic that all this stuff went away nearly 100% in favor of text messaging, only to wiggle it's way back via facebook messenger and now WhatsApp. now i kind of cringe when people send me regular texts.
