• Lunatix door game not running at full-speed (on Windows)

From Rob Swindell@1:103/705 to GitLab issue in main/sbbs on Tue Oct 29 12:42:46 2024
    open https://gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/-/issues/807

Presumably, this door game doesn't play well with the Synchronet virtual UART/FOSSIL driver, so investigate that:

I looked into this and apparently I had installed Lunatix on Vertrauen in April of 2022 for testing purposes, most likely to look into reports of performance issues. I run that door now in my Win7-32 VM and it runs full-speed, very fast. No problems. No changes were committed around April of 2022 and none are indicated now. This does not appear to be an issue in Synchronet v3.20 at least.

Cool. I didn't need netfoss to achieve full speed with that door game, so not sure what you're doing different (other than running v3.19 instead of v3.20 of SBBS).

Running 3.20 here as well, and I have to use netfoss to run this door, otherwise I have the issue with slowness. Granted, the 3.20 I'm using is from March of '23. I'll find time to update my SBBS this week and see whether it fixes it for me too.

I finally got around to updating. I'm on 3.20a 6d7f85680 now.

Lunatix still runs as slowly as ever, unfortunately. Needs Netfoss to run at full speed.

I copied sbbsexec.dll to c:\Windows\System32, but it did not make a difference.

Thanks for the update. I haven't been able to reproduce this problem. I'm using LUNATIX: Version 4.3a. Do you know of your LUNATIX is using FOSSIL or COM/UART for I/O?

Thanks for the update. I haven't been able to reproduce this problem. I'm using LUNATIX: Version 4.3a. Do you know of your LUNATIX is using FOSSIL or COM/UART for I/O?

    Same r version here.

In INSTALL.EXE, under option D to Setup Other Nodes / Edit Configs, I had option 13) FOSSIL driver will be in use? (1=Yes, 0=No) set to 1 for all my nodes.

Just for funzies I tried setting this to 0. Guess what? Now the door runs at full speed without Netfoss (but crashes if I try to run it through Netfoss).

I don't recall ever trying to change this option. I'll leave it as 0 for a while for all nodes and see how it goes.

Wild to think this may be all the problem was all along!

I don't think Netfoss supports UART emulation, so I'm not suprised that test doesn't work with Netfoss. The door *should* run full speed with either UART or FOSSIL virtualization under Synchronet. FOSSIL is usually better/faster (supports block data transfer), but occasionally there's a door or door kit that works better via UART. I have Lunatix configured for FOSSIL I/O here on Vertrauen and (at least on Win7-32), it's running full speed with that configuration.

I don't recall ever trying to change this option. I'll leave it as 0 for while for all nodes and see how it goes.

Wild to think this may be all the problem was all along!

Well it might be a work around, but not a solution. If I can reproduce the issue, I can fix it, but so far, no luck. I'll try with a fresh install of Synchronet on a new OS image and see how it performs (with FOSSIL I/O).

I am glad you got it working. I tried setting my fossil driver to zero and it still ran slow. Netfoss fixed me up so I will just stick with it.
