Two Shadows Cross Jupiter
On Saturday morning, July 20, observers located near the longitudes of Hawaii can watch two shadows crossing the southern hemisphere of Jupiter at the same time for about 43 minutes. At 4:05 a.m. Hawaiian Standard Time (or 14:05 UT), the shadow of Io will join the shadow of Europa, which began its own crossing of the planet 90 minutes earlier. Europa's shadow will leave Jupiter at 4:48 a.m. HST (or 14:48 UT), leaving Io's shadow to continue on alone until 6:13 a.m. HST (16:13 UT). By then the sky will be brightening.
