• Original rogue!

    Hello.

I am new around here, so I thought about saying something interesting for a start.

I have been playing with Rogue's code. In case you are not aware, Rogue is the game that started the genre of roguelikes (duh). In fact, I got some bug fixed even. That is me, sitting lonely fixing code decades old :-(

Anyway, other rogue fans around here?

Yeah, I like to play Rogue sometimes. I have an original 5.25" floppy of it for the Color Computer 3.

I never have beaten it. I usually get about 6 or 7 floors deep before getting waxed by some lucky low-level monster.

Yes! I had a DOS version someone gave me after I got my first XT clone
back in late 1987. Used to play it all the time until I got hooked on
    SimCity 2000. :)

I got it out a while back and got it set up under dosemu. I could not get
near as far with it as I could back in the day.

The version I had did not come with the code, though. Is the one you've
been playing with also a DOS version?

Yeah, early roguelikes are like that. Lots of people has been playing Nethack for a decade and not managed to beat it.

I have been playing a bit in ElwinR's server (where you can play rogue over SSH) but those versions have a mini bug that artificially raises difficulty. Ar least Unix Rogue V4 and Rogue V5. I made some bugfixes but I can't contact the dev so I am hosting them in my gopher site instead.

BTW, sorry for the delayed response. My BBS took a holiday for update.

Actually, the code I fetched from Rogue Gallery's collection, which is itself a pile of fixed code built on the Rogue Restoriation Project. It is Unix.

A guy who was fed up with Rogue's bugs (which were plenty back in the day) wrote something called "Rogue Clone" which is available from many Linux distributions. You can tell it is not the same, but it it plays a lot like it, so you can isntall it for a quick fix of native running nostalgia.

Oh, you could also test the original one with my patches. It would make me feel important.

Oh man, I'm a huge fan of rogue like games. I was pretty addicted to angband for awhile. Its been awhile since I've played the text versions. I've been playing many of the graphical versions lately, like Rogue Legacy, etc.

Angband is quite nice. Some people complains it is too grindy and that it has too much micro management, but it has a better sense of advancement than Rogue. In Rogue you don't really sense you are building up a character and a good arsenal. You mostly have a bunch of unidentified stuff and you are always fighting strength-draining an armor-destroying monsters :-)

I played the original Rogue when i was a kid, then graduated to
Hack and Moria. These days i still enjoy an occasional game of
Angband, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, and NetHack.

Which platform are you hacking Rogue on?
