• Some musings about new board software

    Hey everyone!

I realise that I only ever really lurk around the message bases, but for once I

    actually have something to say.

For a while now I've been considering writing some new board software for myself, I've been umm-ing and err-ing for a little while now about setting up a

board, I doubt I ever will due to the idiots I call my ISP not liking anything other than HTTP, but I thought I'd try out some board software anyway.

So over the past few months I've tried out: WWIV, Mystic, Synchronet, Citadel/UX and even RemoteAccess in MS-DOS emulation; and none of them for one reason or another work for me personally.

So, for fun, I've started (sort of...) developing my own board software. I never intended to put any sources out there, let alone binaries, but if people are interested, I probably will.

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there, if you want to ask questions or offer any suggestions, feel free!

Sounds very interesting, what have you gotten it doing so far? What platforms will/does it run on?

Very cool, is it (going to be) on github or publicly available version controlling repository? I'd like to have a look at your board once you have something working for sure!

    Nice job dude!!

Any quick thoughts on what you liked or didn't like about each one? It's always interesting to hear others perspective on the BBS software du jour.

So, for fun, I've started (sort of...) developing my own board software. I never intended to put any sources out there, let alone binaries, but if people are interested, I probably will.

What language are you writing it in? Any inspiration or key features you're looking to develop?

Overall I think it's great that folks still have an interest in developing BBS software. Hopefully you'll keep us aprised of your progress.

Awesome, Rebello! I love ANY advancement or new options in the BBS world - and I think we have a community that is still open and desiring new things... I hope that you do continue your project; I have some questions, but they were asked... what are you writing it in; will it be open-source, etc etc...

I'll offer a link that may or may not give you some ideas... checkout the BBS called Klud.ge @ klud.ge:23 . The guy wrote it himself, and its not your average BBS software. You can really feel how he wasn't around for the BBS times - his message areas are more like internet forums that standard BBS style... which is nice, but different from how FTNs work. However, he does have

DoveNet flowing and... seeing the software might be of interest to you.

Most importantly, I hope you'll keep us in the loop if you do continue with the

project at all. I'm always interested in the new haps in the BBS world... and am glad that you might start something up. DO IT!

    Great stuff :)

I'm writing a mailer and tosser that is also aimed at managing an FTN network (easier).

I've got the mailer part working, and the node management mostly done, now I'm working on mail tossing and feeding. Once I have that going I'll invite people to send it packets and to see if you can break it :)

I think its great that folks have inspiration to improve this legacy hobby of ours...

I love shiny new objects and would love to see it's development. I run (soon to be 2.5 Mystic BBS's) but am always open to something cutting edge and different that inspires me to start another BBS (I have too many RPI's and windows boxes laying around, yeesh ..)

I posted a sample after my reply; on the original message I saw it with 5 lines

in between each sentence that showed the issue. I have, however, experienced posts that looked like they had many more than 5-6 lines in affected areas.

I've since used mL's work-around, and have noticed that posts from him seem to not have the issue happening currently. I'm hoping its fixed from my BBS to ya'll; I suppose time will tell.
