• Saving ANSIs with 80 char width

From Codefenix@1337:3/150 to All on Sun Apr 17 09:36:29 2022
I've slowly started coming to the realization that messages containing ANSI are

most often posted with a width no more than 80 characters.

I assume it's either their BBS software pre-processing the message (Mystic, I'd

guess), or the ANSI editor they're using. I know ACiDDraw takes a max width option when saving. It inserts a CR before the X'th character followed by the necessary cursor sequences to resume drawing where it left off.

Is this done to help ensure messages with ANSI are optimally viewable on as many connected boards as possible, or is there some other reason for this?

Also, if my above assumption is correct, is there anything other than ACiDDraw that can save ANSIs with a max width specified? A command line utility would be

    nice for roBOT output.

I want to ensure that my ads and weather posts with ANSI in them don't look like trash on other peoples boards.

I Use Moebuis but its not a command line tool

I use the Mystic built in ANSI editor (found in the Mystic CFG), when you're saving your ANSI, you can tell it to make it X chars wide, I always use 79 as some terminals go borky if you draw in the 80th column.

    Hope this helps.

It does, thanks. I also just found where it states that on the Mystic Wiki. It's pretty eye opening.

So for ads, I can easily control the X chars wide, so long as I use an editor that supports the option. It's trickier for roBOT posts though, where I cannot as easily control that. This is why the weather reports I like to post look heinously borked unless viewed in Mystic or recent versions of Sync.

Maybe I'll write a script to massage the roBOT ANSIs before posting... hmm.

    For the *drawing* width, yes.

I'm talking about the raw ANSI which makes up the drawing. If you look at the raw makeup of the ANSI messages posted in the ad echoes from Mystic systems, you find that none of them are greater than 79 characters wide. They force a CR

followed by cursor movements in order to return to the spot where the drawing continues.

ANSI messages posted from non-Mystic boards usually won't have that, I think what happens as a result in certain readers is the text wrap logic tries to wrap the ANSI sequences, thus borking the results.

I wonder if you can do some clever regex and usage of `fold` to be able to script it all into a nice automagical robot type post?
