• Gmail App Password/Email Verification

    From paulie420@1337:3/129 to Bucko & JaXon on Sat Dec 23 09:09:53 2023
    Big thanks to both Bucko and JaXon - Bucko told me months ago about the GMail App Passwords, but I wasn't able to figure it out - or find it;

    JaXon's recent how-to got me 99% of the way there, however on the Security page

    there was no 'App Passwords' section at the bottom... I had to search in the bar on the top of the page for 'App Passwords' - this allowed me to generate one... another funny bit - if you search in the search bar for 'App Password' it brings up something else. Google really tries to hide this 'feature'... I know its because of how 'insecure' it is, but is exactly what we need for BBS Email Verification...

    At any rate, 2oFB is back up and running - without having to pay for an SMTP server... thanks guys!

    No problem at all!!! To be honest, it's not just BBS' that need to use this, apps like Thunderbird, and some older versions of Outlook need it too..

    You know - I've never used Thunderbird, or any client really, on Linux... but that makes sense; shame on Google for burying it so far underground.

    I have been trying to move everything to Debian, so I played with Thunderbird to see how it would play out for me, just trying to get gmail going was a joke.

    I haven't touched it since. Much as I hate to admit it, gmail's web experience is superior to any standalone app experience I've used so they've won me over in that regard. Naturally offline messages aren't a thing but that has not been an issue for me

    Same reason that for years I've just used the web gmail - it works just fine, but doesn't offer the portability and privacy that a client gives...

    I'm slowly moving away from the big tech offerings and just paying for what I need. VPN = mullvad with cash - gotta love that...

    Although not a fan of their web experience, I do use it for everything, I have several accounts 1 for BBS stuff, one for buisness, one for me. After viewing a

    Like I said in a previous message, I use it as a server for my domain name email instead of hosting it on my own server, I saw a video on YouTube and followed the instructions and it works perfect. I can send from any name I want

    that i have hooked up to my gmail account, bucko@wrgnbr.com, sysop@wrgnbr.com, al@wrgnbr.com etc.. Works really nice, BUT in order to send emails from those names I have to use the web app..
