• FUTO invests in Immich - it's GOOD!

From paulie420@1337:3/129 to All on Thu Jun 6 20:16:07 2024
I'd heard of Immich before, a Google Photos or iCloud self-hosted solution for photos. It was already growing in popularity and has been covered on all the self-hosted podcasts and Linux outlets... FUTO has announced that they are investing in the project so the 3 main developers can work on it full-time.

    https://www.futo.org/what-is-futo

I fully support FUTO - many of you might watch Luis Rossman, the right to repair ringmaster; he has been working with FUTO for the past two years and Luis caught wind of Immich because of his issues with Nextcloud. [If you use Nextcloud for photos it uses TONS of CPU...] Here's the announcement of Immich/Futo joining up:

    https://www.youtube.com/live/cwz2iZwYpgg?si=o4SjLmIkRy7RocfL

So at any rate, I gave Immich an install. Its an easy affair; I chose to spin up a Debian 12 LXC container and just had to add docker repos [So you get the newest versions of] and install docker, docker compose and docker.io... in less

than 5 minutes you'll have Immich rocking on port :2283. I downloaded the iOS app; make sure you point the app to 'http://x.x.x.x:2283' else it won't accept it. You can also point your server to a domain, but I haven't needed that yet.

I gave it 4 CPUs at first, but depending on your machine that was too much. I found that 2 CPUs, 4GB RAM and 1GB swap is more than enough... well; when you uploading a huge archive of photos, the LXC will ping at 100% CPU b/c of ffmpeg

but after its MORE than enough...

Point of this post is - Immich freaking R0CKS. It's [already] an iCloud replacement contender, and I think with the new investment and full-time development that we're going to see even more features and codebase coming SOON. Like... its really good.

Any of you running an Immich? Using it as yer main photo backup??? I really might jump all in - its that impressive. If you'd like to replace Google Photo's, or your cell phones photo backup you have to give this project a l00k!!!!

yeah, I discovered immich about a year ago - it is awesome.

In fact, I've set it up and forgotten about it - I should double check that it is still syncing from my and the wifi's phone.

Ahh, cool - that allows me to ask you; what improvements have you seen over the

past 12 months? I noticed their old logo vs the newer one that is much more professional looking. Have they been adding features recently??

I'm also excited to see what their able to add now that they'll be working on it full time.

I have a HUGE photo archive - well, not super huge but I pay for 2TB of iCloud... its taking quite a while to do the first upload; and giving the LXC container 2 cores isnt helping move that along any quicker - but I'm still super impressed so far.

So I'll admit that I dont "use" it daily/weekly. For me it is a set and forget setup.

I have the same aspirations as the original author, I have a ton of photos/videos (kids growing up), that I did not want hosted outside my house. But I did want the convenience of finding/browsing etc.

I started writing something myself, that mainly organised them by date and found confirmed duplicates - I sometimes have 2x, 3x photos because of copying them off other devices and no real organisation strategy.

When I discovered immich, not only could I import my existing library, but it gave me the usuability that I was after. eg: "show me birthday parties", "show <daughter> at the beach". As well as face recognition that enabled me to link my kids (and strangers) as they grow up.

So what's changed? Layout and usability from what I can see. Love how you can find photos quite easily, from the 20,000+ that I have. (Especially since I've spent so little time playing with this software.)

And love even more that they sync from the phone automatically.

Understood - thats kinda the point, so long as it works. I won't fully RELY on Immich until they get a stable, but it looks like they'll be able to work on it

fulltime now - which is awesome!

I use iCloud, so there is some issues there... they don't support pulling down files that are in the cloud - even tho there are ways to doso. I was going to use a project like https://github.com/boredazfcuk/docker-icloudpd to pull my iCloud data down and then add it to the Immich vault thru its CLI, however Apple offers ways to get your data at https://privacy.apple.com/account so I think I'll just wait for them to send me EVERYTHING...

You might want to look at another project under the FUTO umbrella called 'Circles' - offers the same stuff as Immich but its completely encrypted end-to-end for those data that you don't want Zuckerburg to ever see.

Can't wait to see the featuresets improve in the near future... I *think* they'll produce and I'm happy to see them join w/ FUTO - do you have any thoughts on the FUTO partnership???

I remember I was able to pull down photos from iCloud. It was a long time ago, and I've just discovered that it was turned on again, and there are a bunch of photos there (I dont know if I have them at home already). Cant remember how I did it, but I remember it wasnt that intuitive at the time.

I'd never heard of FUTO before you mentioned it. But already like its mission. My data is mine, and I while I may have lost my data to the internet, I'm trying to protect my kids from it. So anything that supports running some cool tech at home, I'm all in.

Weird - I haven't come across that functionality in the docs, nor the /r/immich

Works a charm for all my on-device data, and new photos - I just have to get my

The guy behind it worked for Yahoo during the dot com build up and bust - supposedly made tons of money and is the developer behind that drop-down terminal Yuakake (sp?)... he's in it to make money, but I kinda agree with most

of what they stand for; certainly all their pillars. I don't mind when open-source makes income - I mean that kinda has to happen for people to want to develop past their personal needs... and they say they'll always offer a self-hosted version for 'us' - they want to sell open-source to the masses and give big tech a run for their money.

Oh, I meant outside of immich.

IE: I logged into icloud.com, selected photos (you can only do a 1000 at a time), and then press download. Once downloaded, I'd delete them.

Bit of a pain if you have 1000's up there I guess.

Got it - in that case, yea I found that aforementioned project that allows you to pull ALL your iCloud data; photos, videos, and all the other iCloud stuff - with a Linux command so long as you have the HDD space - from there, you can pull it all into Immich thru their CLI tools.

Also, I found https://privacy.apple.com where Apple will let you request all your iCloud data. You can set 1GB, 4GB...32GB chunks and they will host the data for 60 days so you can pull down...
