• Apple Event - Tuesday 10am Pacific

From Bob Roberts@1337:3/135 to All on Mon Nov 9 11:13:38 2020
I might be the only Apple Fanboi here, but just in case anyone is interested....

Apple is expected to announce their very first computer products running on "Apple Silicon" aka ARM based processors tomorrow (Tuesday), at 10am Pacific. They stream their presentations on Apple TV, and at Apple.com.

Rumor is new ARM based iMacs, 13 and 16 inch Macbooks. This is a major transition for the company, moving off Intel onto their custom designed chips shoulf allow them to surpass the performance barriers Intel has encountered in the latest Intel mobile processors. Apple's already done this a few times, the

latest around 2005 when they transitioned from PowerPC to Intel processors.

Anyways, Apple Events are always entertaining. So check it out if so inclined.

    *** Spoilers ***

So, the new M1 chip. 8 processors, 4 high performance, 4 high efficency. 2x performance at 1/2 the power. Built in GPU. Can drive a single 6k display.

    New M1 powered computers:
    - Macbook Air (fanless)
    - Mac Mini
    - Macbook Pro 13

It looks like a pretty impressive chip which allows crazy battery life in these

devices. I'm looking forward to the "M2" which will drive more displays.

The first Geekbench scores for the M1 are starting to show up -- and it's pretty impressive. Single core scores higher then any other Mac ever released.

Multi-core higher then all except the iMac Pro and Mac Pro.

    I am soooo tempted.

My iMac is a 2013, and I use it daily (and have done since I've got it), and I just cannot fault it.

And its because I cant fault it I cant justify spending the money on getting a new one - perhaps there should be an accident...

Yeah. I just upgraded my desktop at the very end of 2019, so I'm set for awhile. I'm most curious about what they will put in the new Macbook Pro 16. I'm guessing it's a sort of M1X with faster processors, or more graphics CPUs or something.... thats the one that will tempt me to get a new portable solution.
