Hey opicron, I love your rjam mystic mod message reader as it makes
reading message bases so much nicer, others seem to agree as well
    looking at the github.

Is any work being done on wide screen support? Its just too amazing.

I need to rework the setting and ansi files, using the mystic python functions getini and getansi (i think). They will automatically get the correct file for certain screen sizes.

Should not be too much work. But finding time seems to be an issue.
Hope to do it end of the year :/

That's great to hear! I've been using NNTP for a while now, but having
the badass wide screen reader and editor will just be that much better.

I'm sure there are others that will be just as grateful for this as I am.

You know Paulie will be all over it too. >.>

Is this a new message reader for a bbs or a standalone client you're referring to?

I prefer to use the BBS to send echomail nowadays, I gave NNTP a try, its not bad, but I like to use the BBS, widescreen mode is great, love using mystic in widescreen mode. I have made everything run with widescreen support where possible including the message editor and reader/lister in mystic.

Yup its his MPL message reader/browser thingy. It makes the message
browsing experience much easier (IMO I suppose). It currently has issues
when loaded with a wide-screen 132 column system.

So yup ML, its the BBS client. I personally use both, but using NNTP
with Betterbird (Thunderbird fork) for both News and Mail (and a simple
Matrix client) has been a nice experience.

I tried NNTP a few days ago (Mystic A47) and the experience was interesting.

I found Thunderbird mostly worked, although occasionally it appeared to disconnect and Thunderbird got confused (started pulling up empty articles). Restarting Thunderbird fixed it - until the next time.

Pan was a non-starter - I don't remember exactly, but I think it failed to retrieve the groups.

tin didn't play nicely. Again, I can't recall exactly what the issue was.

slrn looked promising, and mostly worked, but never saw new messages.

    I haven't retried with Mystic A48.

but I like to use the BBS, widescreen mode is great, love

I took a look at this but success has been limited so far. Where I tripped up was the Mystic display codes require a two digit number, so saying "Fill until column 131" doesn't work. I can probably re-work things to not rely on those display codes - haven't had a chance to try that yet (I was hoping the simple approach would work, lol).

I was trying to tweak the indexed message reader - is that what you did?

    Cheers.

Currently using Thunderbird/Betterbird (Fork), and found that issue at
first. I have since set it to check for new messages every X minutes and
that seems to work much better.

Upgrade to the latest Mystic, it'll let you use 3 char position codes so widescreen will work better for you there.

Hmm, I'll try that. I did step up from A47 to A48 with no change, but I think there's an A49 I could try (not on the Mystic web site, but I'm sure I'll be able to find it somewhere - edit: I did). Thanks for the pointer.

In my limited spare time I've made some progress on this - it's mostly good, except I haven't worked out how to adjust the width of the message list (ie, space out Subject, To, From). I suspect it has to do with the legacy screen codes. I tweaked them to make the screen longer, but can't work out how to make it wider :-( Making the surrounding screen elements was obviously as easy as adjusting the .ans file - it's just the dynamic contents I'm stuck on.

I started looking at the old Mystic source from way back, but sleep time caught up with me before I found any answers (if indeed there are answers to be had in code that old).

A quick Google didn't shed any light on it either.

Amazing what a fresh look the next day can achieve. I found reference to "Prompt Information Codes", which matched what I was seeing in the source. That led me to the theme.ini file, which initially didn't help, but that led me to a "prompt editor" which I wasn't familiar with, but found in the Mystic config tool.

Adjusting prompt #399 seems to have done the business. Initially it didn't, but figured I'd log off and back on just in case it only read the change during login, and away it went!

After all this, it created a new prompts.txt file in my theme directory that had my change in it (overriding the default).
