    Mostly because it just works.

If there was a modern port of the original OPUS CBBS I would certainly look hard at that.

Thinking in the case of Mystic that without the (out of date) videos Avon put up, and some help from those who had done a Mystic board already, that I would have found the time commitment too extensive to put up by BBS.

It seemed that first time around (with Fido and then Opus) the documentation presumed the prospective Sysop had little experience and might be pioneering by

    working largely alone.

Thinking the current situation presumes a new Mystic Sysop is either very well versed in how things work or has access to help who does know their way around BBSes.

    Different take.

While I'd wanted to use Synchronet when I got back into BBSing, Mystic was the 'current' software that was most like the Telegard and Renegade that I used back in the 90s - that, and having MPL to create my own things for 2oFB and I was sold... its like the RG I'd always wanted back then - heck, I think all of us did!!

Wow, back in 2018 when I was getting back into BBS'n I started to try all different Softwares, I won't go into all of them here. I installed Mystic and it was simple and booted right up and I was able to log on to it in minutes. It

was pitiful how plain it was, but I liked it. Of course I was considered at typical fly by night Mystic SysOp on Facebook, but I didn't care. I was back into this stuff.

What do I like about it? Customizable!! I took this plain ass software, added a

completely different login to it, full cursor driven menus, I have used the base Mystic software to create a login menu on my website that will allow someone to login to any of my BBS' from this "Front End". I built a InterBBS file server, I have used the Mystic Base to stop bots from attacking my Commodore board! There really isn't anything I can't do with it..

Tips?? Use it, play with it, so many new sysOp's put one up and forget about it, don't forget about it. Play with it, play with the Menu editor, that thing is so powerful that it is amazing what you can do with it. I will give you an example. Back in the day, sysOp's would add a graphic screen on logoff, Call these other BBS' and list the BBS'. Well on my board, on logoff, you can logoff, OR call the BBS'! You hit TAB and it drops you to a second menu which lists some other BBS' and if you hit enter on any of them it takes you to that BBS. When you logoff that BBS, it logs you off my BBS. It goes back to Customization! I have other things, themes play with them, I have a full Commodore Image BBS theme which mimics a Image BBS. Again play with it!! You won't go wrong...

What would folks want out of updated videos? Just covering the new versions of software, and the current eccentricities of installation? (Cryptlib doesn't wanna compile on Ubuntu, etc...) and fsxNet setup??

Cover other BBS softwares? Cover ddns.net domain use? (Or synchro.net / TQW domains)?

I can't see new vid's doing much of anything more then Avon's originals unless you are going to cover things he didn't cover. Having just gone through the process (and a few times as testing out different software and landing on Mystic), the videos were *very* helpful.

One of the areas where they could do with updates is around the changes to the interface - digging around you can either find the settings to change or test and make adjustments where necessary. This is particularly true for the FTN setup.

Could also touch on some of the other areas around specifically customisation around menus, etc.

But at the end of the day, the videos are a very very valuable resource.

For Mystic related videos maybe something along the lines of a daily/weekly maintenance script that packs message/user/file bases merges nodelists from your received file echos.

Maybe a "how to back up your BBS" video and "how to switch from Windows to Linux" as that seems to come up quite often as well.

A video explaining how to get DOS doors working under Linux might also be helpful.

Cover other BBS softwares? Cover ddns.net domain use? (Or synchro.net / TQW domains)?

Well - the 'problem' is that his videos are 4 years outdated... nothing crazy, but the new compile cryptlib stuff - that might not even be an issue since the 12 months I've taken a look at it. Or, other things like I think he was on a46 - and a48 is now the 'stable'.

And other 'things' like where can sysops get the 'newest' [totally old and outdated] MPL documentation - or, how to install other softwarez like Synchronet or Enigma .5....

How to setup a domain; whether thats a purchased domain, or a duckdns.whatever/ddns.whatever...

    However; I hear ya.

Absolutely right, they are definitely old. In fact he was not on A46 when made he was on A39! LOL That is what I started on in 18.. I would wholeheartedly agree with a cryptlib vid, I was able to get it going from a post on Fido, but others are definitely going to have issues with it. Go for it!! :) I would love a vid series on programming with MPL, maybe it would get me to learn it, I can't grasp it. When I see others in the same boat as me everyone says it is easy if you know basic this is just like it, well I know basic, but MPL is TOUGH! I would love a series on that. As for other softwares, Synchronet is simple to set up, but some of the internal workings are tough, and I know Rob has a video series already on that. BUT Enigma might be nice, I ran Enigma for a couple of years, if you read some of the messages that went back and forth between myself and NuSkooler you'll see it wasn't the easiest at least for me.
