• ESXi on Raspberry Pi hardware...

From paulie420@1337:3/129 to All on Sun Oct 18 22:08:28 2020
So this is a new release for Raspberry Pi boards... I am using a Pi 4 w/ 8gb, but I do believe they released it for other versions of the Pi too.

ARM is coming, and to the server side too... I'm just giving this a run for
the experience, really... It is VMWare, runing inside the Pi - I've tried Debian, Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu... Windows 10 won't boot, even with the 1.2 firmware that allows you to boot into Win10 on a Pi *with issues*.

ESXi works perfectly, is free, and functions as if you installed it on a
badass server... well, a server with the specs of an RPi 4... :P

Anyone interested in this? Just goto VMWare and grab ESXi on ARM for Pi.

Hmmm now that is not a bad idea.. I wonder how it will run on a 4gb version.
I just got one a few weeks ago and other then contemplating setting up a PBX phone system on it I used it to fix a HD that went bad on me Friday night. Other then that it has been sitting on my shelf waiting for a project. GOnna have to check this out..

    Howdy,

ESXi works perfectly, is free, and functions as if you installed it on a badass server... well, a server with the specs of an RPi 4... :P

So I have me an 8GB Pi 4 - which I put ESXi on about a week ago, and I've been "running it in" to see how stable it is.

    Its pretty good.

The only downside is that it will only boot 64 bit kernels. I was hoping to move my RISC OS to a VM, and also play with dosbian - and may only do it with dosbian if it is running a 64 kernel (or I can make it with a 64bit kernel)... (32 bit user space is OK).

But I'm a huge fan of ESXi - use it all the time. For me, I treat it like firmware - ie: it enables you to partition a machine, gives you a remote console (via a
browser which is a plus), perfect for me, since I run everything headless.

I'll be moving my BBS and hub over to a VM very soon...

    Hmmmm, I have seen the PBX softwares, that set up your house or biz with PBX and hold, accounts etc... but you just gave me an idea;

I collect antiques, and want to run my vintage phones around the house. I wonder if theres any software that actually supplies VOIP service to your
home phone network; like a magicjack.

The PBX you used doesn't do that, does it?? I'll update this post if I find a solution, too.

Thats exactly why I am testing it, too... I don't use ESXi as much as you - I don't have a powerful enough server to run daily driver stuff; but depending
on speed of an RPi 1gb & 8gb, I might do a headless for my BBS too - for the ease factor; I currently use ssh/VLC, but if it were all in one it would be simpler for sure.

We'll see, thats a lot of overhead for a Pi.
However, if someone just uses it to LEARN in order to setup their main ESXI system later, the Pi is perfecto!

You may run into troubles running guests on the 1GB under ESXi - but on the 8GB, it runs really well. (That said, I've only created 1 VM so far.)

I have an APU1D as well - not a powerful machine, but no VGA, so I use ESXi on it as well (runs opnsense for me) - the Pi is faster it seems.

I'll get the Pi working hard - probably move my mail server, pihole and my sons

This is actually really neat, and I was looking at a few videos about that
too before I make the purchase of said RPi... the ESXi installation is only
for 6 months though, after that you "have" to pay for a license, which is putting me off.

On my current hypervisor I run Proxmox VE which is free, unless I want
support or enterprise solutions and then it costs. I thought VMWare did an offering like that, but everywhere I look since reading your initial message seems to suggest that ESXi is not free after 6 months use.

Still a very interesting project, and I am wondering if I can get Proxmox on the RPi, if so... that's what I will get a RPi for. 8GB ram and quad core should make it a really nice system for hosting containers and virtualising lots of stuff. Get a couple and one could make a cluster.

    Exciting times

Actualy, I haven't done the project yet. I saw it on a YouTube video and was interested in it, I am 99% sure there is a PBX project that uses the ObiHai
202 box and allows Google Voice to be your VOIP service.. I have the ObiHai
and have 4 phone numbers on it. I use 1 for Fax, one for Data (Not hooked up

You know, Louis, I don't - but can tell you that I've loaded it on both a Raspberry Pi 4B 1gb and 8gb model.. I do have a 3B+, a 3A and a Pi Zero - if you really want to know, lemme know what model you want tested and I'll [try to] boot it up.

Hmmmm.. so is that what proxmox is, a VE similar to ESXi??? I had seen people talking about proxmox, and never knew if I could implement or use it for any
    of my tasks...

I *think* you're right about the 6 month thing... I know they released the
ESXi RPi thing just so people could learn/use it with the raspberry pi
systems, but if I were to run ESXi for any time I would want to put it on decent hardware so I could actually use it deeply.

Altho, the other poster Sean says with an 8gb model he gets some good performance off the Pi even.

It is exciting, for me these Pi's have been nothing short of awesome. I run kinda old hardware even for most of my daily drivers - and the Pi
ecosctructure really works for me. Teaches linux to my kids, runs my
BBS, Home Assistant Server, Pi-Hole and more. They are a big part of my home computer network. :P

can find the main telephone line and plug into the Pi so that all the phone jack boxes around the house would be live. :P That would be wicked cool, for me.

Actually, I don't know how you would plug the line into the Pi. My obiHai
setup I don't need anything to run it it does it all itself. The PBX setup
uses network phones and wifi for cell phones to be able to use it. One of
these days I am going to try it out and see what happens, I saw on Craigslist
a local guy was selling 5 network phones for like $100 so I was thinking
about picking them up. I will let you know if I work this out..

Actually, ESXi is "free" - but for 6 months you get the full stack (there is a lot more to ESXi than just the hypervisor). I think after 6 months, the extra features are turned off.

That said, with v6.x it was pretty easy to reset the counter, I'm assuming that

    Yeah, easy peasy.

You can run freepbx, or maybe even 3cx.

With the old phones you'll need an ATA though, that speaks SIP on one side, and

provides the 5V(?) and analog on the other (to the handset).
