• Emulators on a Pi4

If you install Virtualbox on a Pi4 running raspian, are you able to emulate/load an intel OS as a virtual machine or can you only emulate OSes
that can run on an ARM?

    Hi Mike,

I am not an expert, but I believe that on a Pi, you can have ARM based OSes in VM's. I think I read somewhere that you "could" emulate x86, but I don't remember where I read that, and I can't find it right now in a quick Google search.

If it IS possible, I would imagine that it would be horrendously slow as the reduced instruction set that ARM has, would have to emulate extra functions that hardware would normally handle in x86, but do it in software.

If I find anything about x86 emulation on ARM or Pi specifically, I will let you know, or if you find out first I'd like to know for sure too.

I bet Deon can answer this better than I could. I'm certain he could.

I've not used Virtualbox, but I've used qemu and dosbox to run DOS and it works

    well.

And with the Pi the RTE200 errors were not a problem...

Via "virtualization", you always get the same kind of architecture in your VMs as your host system has.
So on x86/amd64, you can install those VMs - and on ARM, you can install
ARM VMs, eg. on a RasPi.

If you would like to use "alien" architectures, you have to use an
    emulator instead of virtualization.
There are such available for RasPi systems, I think qemu should do it.
For DOS systems, you could try dosbox.

I think there also has been a paid x86 emulator for the RasPi.

Thank you, Anna. I was thinking that might be the case. Lately, I have
been toying with the idea of running an AROS based distribution in a
virtual box or emulator. As AROS is for x86, it sounds like I would need to install it on such. :)

Isn't there also AROS for 68k, which might work with Amibian or an Amiga emulator for the Raspi?
Or did you specifically mean AROS/x86 that you want to test?

Specifically, I noticed that there is a new release of Icaros, which is
based on AROS and from what I can tell is only for the x86.

Maybe I should do some specific web research on how to emulate an Amiga on a
Pi and go from there instead of starting out with an OS of choice. :)
